Charcoal

Charcoal plays a fundamental role in ironmaking as a reducing agent. In pig iron production, charcoal performs two functions: as a fuel, generating the heat required to operate the blast furnace, and as a chemical agent, removing oxygen during the process.

The charcoal used by Grupo Alterosa comes exclusively from 27,000 hectares of the Group’s own planted forests, which contributes decisively to making the complete process (reforestation + plant operation) significantly positive in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Like all growing plants, trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while releasing oxygen into it. Due to their size, extensive leaf surface, and long harvest cycle, planted forests do this with particular efficiency.
